What analysts expect from JPMorgan

JPMorgan, the largest US bank by assets, is the first to report. According to AlphaStreet, the consensus estimate from 12 analysts is earnings of $5.93 per share on revenue of about $51.19 billion, with EPS estimates ranging from $5.59 to $6.23. Other data providers show slightly different figures. These are analyst estimates, not company guidance, and can change before the report.

Areas in focus

Net interest income, the difference between what banks earn on loans and pay on deposits, is one of the main sources of revenue for large lenders. It is affected by interest rates, loan growth and deposit costs.
Trading and investment banking revenue are important for Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley in particular, and also for JPMorgan and Citigroup. These businesses can vary from quarter to quarter depending on market activity and the number of mergers, acquisitions and share offerings.
Credit quality is another area that is regularly reviewed. Banks set aside provisions for loans that may not be repaid, and changes in these provisions can affect reported profit.

Interest rate background

The results come during a week with other important US data. The September consumer price index (CPI) is scheduled for release on Wednesday, October 14. The 10-year US Treasury yield ended near 5.24% on Friday, October 9. Interest rates can affect banks' lending margins, the value of the bonds they hold and borrowing demand.

Why bank results are watched

Banks are among the first large companies to report each quarter. Their results and comments can provide information on consumer spending, business borrowing, capital markets activity and credit conditions. For this reason, they are often followed as an early indicator of the earnings season. Other large companies scheduled to report this week include Johnson & Johnson, UnitedHealth Group and TSMC.

What to watch

Key items include earnings per share and revenue compared with estimates, net interest income and any updated outlook, trading and investment banking revenue, credit loss provisions, expenses, and capital returns such as dividends and share buybacks. Management comments on the economy, loan demand and the outlook for 2027 may also draw attention.

Risks and uncertainties

Bank results can be affected by interest rates, economic conditions, credit losses, market volatility, regulation and one-off items. Actual results may differ materially from analyst estimates.
