Audi, the premium car brand of the Volkswagen Group (XETRA:
VOW3), plans to build its first manufacturing plant in the United States. The plant is planned for Peach County in the US state of Georgia. The plans were announced on Saturday, October 24, 2026, followed by a joint statement from Audi and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
Key details
According to Audi and the state of Georgia:
- the project represents an estimated investment of $4 billion
- the plant is expected to create about 4,500 jobs
- it is planned to produce up to 200,000 vehicles a year
- site grading is expected to start in 2027 and construction in 2028
- full production is expected in 2031
Some media reports, including the Associated Press, put the investment at $4.2 billion.
The site
The plant is planned on a 1,474-acre site along Georgia Highway 96, near Interstate 75 and close to the city of Macon. The state had bought and prepared the site to attract a large manufacturer. Governor Kemp thanked officials from Peach County, Macon-Bibb County and Houston County, which are part of the local development authority.
The vehicles
According to reports, the plant is planned to build SUVs for customers in North America. Audi said it chose the site because of Georgia's workforce, the speed at which it can bring vehicles to market and the nearby supply chain.
About Audi and Volkswagen
Audi is based in Ingolstadt, Germany, and is one of the brands of the Volkswagen Group, which also includes Volkswagen, Porsche, Škoda, SEAT, Cupra, Lamborghini and Bentley. Until now, Audi has not had its own production plant in the United States. The Volkswagen Group already builds cars in the US at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Car production in the United States
Several foreign carmakers build vehicles in the United States, especially in southern states such as Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. Producing vehicles close to customers can reduce shipping costs and the effect of import tariffs. According to media reports, the investment was presented alongside the US administration's tariffs on imported vehicles and parts.
How large factory projects work
Large factory projects take several years from announcement to full production. They usually involve site preparation, construction, installing production lines, hiring and training workers and building a network of local suppliers. Plans, costs and timelines can change during this process.
What a megasite is
A megasite is a large plot of land, often prepared in advance by a state or local authorities, with roads, utilities and permits planned so that a large manufacturer can start building quickly. US states often compete to attract such projects, which can bring jobs and investment from suppliers to the surrounding area. States may also offer incentives such as tax credits, job training support or infrastructure improvements. The details of any incentives for the Audi project have not yet been fully published.
What to watch
Key items include further details from Audi and Volkswagen about the models and costs, any incentives agreed with the state, the start of site work in 2027 and comments in Volkswagen's quarterly results.
Risks and uncertainties
The project is at an early stage, and its timing, cost and scope may change. Car demand, trade policy and supply chains can affect such plans. Car makers' shares can be volatile.
