Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) begins selling iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, on Friday, October 23, 2026, in more than 70 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and India. Pre-orders opened on October 16.

What iPhone Duo is

According to Apple, iPhone Duo:
  • has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display with the same aspect ratio
  • runs on the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometre process
  • has a titanium frame, a hinge made of more than 100 components and an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance
  • uses Touch ID in the side button
  • has two 48-megapixel rear cameras and a front camera hidden beneath the inner display
  • runs iOS 27, which includes multitasking features designed for the larger display
Apple said that, when opened, iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone it has made.

Price and availability

iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US for the 256GB model, with options up to 2TB. It comes in two colours, star white and night sky. Apple said the device will be available in 28 more countries and regions from October 30.

Apps for the new design

On October 22, Apple said that apps optimized for iPhone Duo will appear in App Store collections from October 23 and will carry a "Made for iPhone Duo" badge. Apps named by Apple include Netflix, Prime Video, Zoom, Slack, Salesforce, Lyft and DoorDash, with Microsoft Word and Outlook expected in the coming weeks. Developers can use new tools in Apple's software kit to adapt their apps to both displays and to the angle of the hinge.

What Apple said

Apple chief executive John Ternus said: "iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original."

Foldable phones

Foldable smartphones have a flexible display that folds in half, so the device can be used as a compact phone or opened into a larger screen. Several manufacturers, including Samsung and Google, have sold foldable phones for a number of years. Foldable phones are generally more expensive than standard models, and their sales have so far been a small share of the overall smartphone market.

Why the launch matters for Apple

The iPhone is Apple's largest source of revenue. A new type of iPhone at a higher price point may affect the mix of models Apple sells and its average selling price. CBS News reported that delivery estimates for new orders moved into next year shortly after pre-orders opened. Investors are likely to follow comments on demand and supply in Apple's upcoming quarterly results.

Battery and charging

Apple said iPhone Duo uses a dual-battery design, with up to 24 hours of battery life when both displays are used equally. It supports wired fast charging to 50% in about 20 minutes. The device uses eSIM only, without a physical SIM card slot.

What to watch

Key items include customer demand and delivery times, reviews of the device's durability, the number of optimized apps, and any comments from Apple on iPhone Duo in its fiscal fourth-quarter results, which are due in the coming weeks. Apple's separate product launch on October 28 may also be of interest.

Risks and uncertainties

Demand for new devices can differ from expectations, and supply constraints may affect deliveries. Foldable devices face competition from other manufacturers, and high prices may limit their appeal. Technology shares can be volatile around product launches.
